Andrea Muñiz is a committed practitioner and facilitator of contact improvisation. They were first introduced to the form at The Boston Conservatory through teacher Olivier Besson and value the practice for its deep attunement to agency and authenticity. Their research centers on athleticism and endurance, technique as a tool for efficiency and physical safety, and collective emergent composition. Their teaching integrates anatomy, body patterning, and compositional play, offering scaffolded learning experiences that bridge physical awareness with creative exploration. Their pedagogical approach has been shaped by somatic healing modalities including Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, and Structural Integration, alongside their experience training and working as a professional dancer and choreographer.
While in Boston, Andrea was part of the rotating teaching roster at Contact Improv Boston, teaching every other month. They have also taught and hosted classes and workshops at JP Contact Improvisation, Vortex, Big Bang 16, Jam du Dimanche, and Queer Dance Boston, including workshops designed for contemporary dancers interested in contact improvisation. In 2026, they taught at the Ontario Regional Contact Jam 2026, one of the largest contact improvisation jams in North America, and are now part of the hosting rotation for Jam du Mercredi in Montréal.
Andrea is currently collaborating with Victoria Hill and Sophie Bijjani to produce events and labs dedicated to the study of contact improvisation. Together, they are organizing the first edition of Camping in Contact, a four-day gathering of workshops, performances, and camping centered around contact improvisation, taking place September 1–4 at Parc National de la Mauricie in Quebec. Andrea’s current practice explores dancing from sensation, falling into front space, and removing ego and expectation from the dance.
Beyond their work in contact improvisation, Andrea has taught dance in diverse environments serving a wide range of students and communities. Through the Midday Movement Series, whose mission is to cultivate a new and diverse generation of dance leaders through mentorship, advocacy, and professional development, they further developed their pedagogical values while working within the professional dance community. Their work with BalletRox and Abilities Dance Boston’s Outreach Program provided opportunities to work with youth and elderly populations, adapting class material to support the wellness and growth of each group. Andrea has also served as a Mass Cultural Council Creative Youth Fellow and as a mentor for the 2022 Bates Dance Festival Young Dancers Workshop.
